Sutton Valence 1st XI braved the wet and windy conditions to secure a hard-fought 2-0 victory away at Herne Bay on Saturday. The visitors dominated the first half, playing some of their best hockey of the season so far, and creating several chances.
It started as a tight and tense affair, with both teams battling for possession and territory in the middle of the pitch. McVarish emerged as playmaster general for the away side and their rhythm started to click.
Bay threatened occasionally and ‘Dave the Save’ was called into action to make some crucial saves, including a spectacular diving stop to deny a deflection from close range.
The deadlock was broken in the 26th minute, when Stamp latched onto a loose ball in the circle and unleashed a powerful reverse stick shot that flew into the bottom corner.
Four minutes later, Valence doubled their lead through Angel, who showed great composure with a clever finish lifted past the advancing keeper to slot home a well-timed lay off from Andy Turnill after a swift break.
Sutton Valence also had plenty of chances to extend their lead, but were unable to convert their breaks, crosses and umpteen penalty corners.
The second half saw Herne Bay increase their pressure and intensity, as they searched for a way back into the game. The game opened out with both teams breaking on several occasions, but Valence held firm and defended well as a unit. The back line of Back, Luksich, Brooks and Blanchard denying the hosts any clear-cut opportunities.
In the final quarter the game petered out as the rain lashed down and it became clear the Home side weren’t going to be able to mount a come-back.
The final whistle sparked celebrations from the Valence players and supporters, who were delighted with the three points and the clean sheet. The result lifts them above Herne Bay in the league and keeps them in contention in a tight top half.
