This week, Valence welcomed league high-flyers Maidstone to the Fortress in what promised to be an exciting and challenging encounter. The weather, however, had other plans, with Storm Bert unleashing wind and rain on the pitch. But nothing could dampen the spirits of the teams as they lined up for the start of the game.
Before the match, one question was on everyone’s mind: would Tom make it to the game on time? The dribbling whirling dervish cut it too fine this week and, much to the crowd's amusement, was forced to start the game from the bench.
A Curious Start:
Valence won the toss, and to the confusion of many, they elected to start the game from the opposite end. How would this unusual decision affect the team? It was a mystery for everyone, but Valence were undeterred. The game kicked off, and Valence quickly showed great promise with some excellent play right from the start.
However, against the run of play, Maidstone struck first. A well-hit shot found its way under keeper Dave’s pads and dribbled over the line, giving Maidstone a 1-0 lead. This setback only seemed to spur Valence on, and they responded in style. Not long after, a blistering run down the right-hand side from Alex Hodges, expertly fed by right-back J. Willmott, ended in a clinical finish to level the scores at 1-1.
Half-time Confusion:
Half-time? The umpires seemed unsure. While some of the teams were distracted by the relentless storm, umpire C. Back found himself wondering if the half time break was due. Thankfully, second umpire J. Edmed, known for his timekeeping, along with the Maidstone bench, confirmed that the first half had ended and it was time to take cover from the wrath of Storm Bert.
The team talk was unusually brief, with everyone eager to return to the pitch—presumably to escape the cold and damp and head to the sanctuary of the Queens Head pub sooner rather than later.
Strong Second Half from Valence:
The second half saw a revitalized Valence team take control. The fitness struggles of previous weeks seemed to have dissipated, and the team played with renewed energy and purpose. Maidstone, on the other hand, began to lose their discipline, and their frustrations started to show, particularly among the older stalwarts.
Valence remained calm and in control, thwarting every Maidstone attack while creating numerous chances themselves. This week, however, the Valence forwards seemed more inclined to pass to each other in front of goal rather than taking the direct shot. Their persistence finally paid off when Valence were awarded a short corner after another picture-perfect passing routine.
Up stepped C. Sheldon, who calmly slotted the ball home, putting Valence ahead 2-1. The team continued to dominate the contest, holding firm at the back while creating several more opportunities to extend their lead.
Full-Time: 2-1 to Valence:
As the final whistle blew, it was a well-deserved 2-1 victory for Valence. The team had produced a performance that everyone could be proud of, showing great resilience and composure in the face of both the stormy weather and a tough Maidstone side.
With the win secured, it was time to vacate the Fortress and head to the Queens Head, where the team could warm up by the fire and enjoy a well-earned pint of Goacher’s.
Looking ahead, Valence will travel to K-Sports next week with a renewed sense of optimism. With the team’s performance on the rise, there’s no telling what they can achieve in the weeks to come.
