Valence Unbeaten Run Comes to a End

Sutton Valence Hockey Club’s 1st XI faced their toughest league challenge in over a year, suffering a narrow 3–2 defeat to Holcombe 4th XI at Sutton Valence School. This marked Sutton Valence’s first league loss since November 2022 and came amidst significant roster difficulties with injuries and illnesses depleting their ranks.

Holcombe set the pace early, scoring within the first four minutes after capitalising on a defensive misstep. Sutton Valence responded swiftly, with Fred McVarish linking up well with Alex Stamp to break down Holcombe’s defence; Stamp struck decisively in the 11th minute to level the score. However, Holcombe’s structured play paid off again as they found the net at the 23-minute mark, leaving Sutton Valence trailing 1–2 at halftime.

After regrouping, Sutton Valence came out with renewed intent. Their efforts were rewarded when Stamp, in a moment of quick reflexes, deflected a short corner to equalise shortly after the restart. Midway through the half, Holcombe pressed forward once more and managed to edge ahead with a well-worked goal, ultimately securing the 3–2 victory. Their goalkeeper was instrumental in holding this lead, pulling off a string of remarkable saves and earning him the title of their man of the match.

For Sutton Valence, Alex Stamp’s two-goal performance and tireless, incisive runs earned him the man of the match accolade, while Stewart Young showed resilience in goal against Holcombe’s sharp attacks. Defenders Russell Blanchard, Matt Luksich, and Dan Brooks worked tirelessly to counter Holcombe’s structured play, and Fred McVarish showed creativity in midfield, with Lewis Mitchell and Chris Johnson supporting efforts to transition from defence to attack. Brett Angel added pressure up front, while Chris Back maintained solid distribution. Substitute Richard Turnill added fresh energy, though Holcombe’s disciplined play proved just enough to deny Sutton Valence the points.
